COACHING EDUCATION OVERVIEW
ITU Coaching Education Courses
- Level I Community Coach
- This course will prepare coaches to assist and present skills, drills and techniques and for grassroots development of youth and beginners.
- Level II Competitive Coach
- This is an applied and practical course for coaching the junior to U23 competitive athlete.
- Level III High Performance Coach
- This is an interactive applied course that integrates current triathlon trends in training, sport science and triathlon specific planning and evaluation for coaching the high performance ITU Elite athlete.
- National Federation Coaching Education Programme Accreditation
- This is a programme whereby National Federations (NF) may apply for coaching education course accreditation through ITU.
- Coaching Mentorship Programme
COACHING EDUCATION PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
Level I Community Coaching Course
Objective - This course will prepare coaches to assist and present skills, drills and techniques and for grassroots development of youth and beginners.
Duration – This is a 28-30 hour course that will include theoretical and practical components.
Prior requirements – None
Target group – Teachers, coaches, parents, and interested individuals with little on no experience in the sport.
Course Requirements for completion
- 100% attendance
- Active participation during the course.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- Act in an appropriate manner that is consistent with the spirit of the triathlon philosophy.
What to bring
- Bikes are not required.
- Running and swimming clothes.
- Notebook and writing tools.

Level II Competitive Coaching Course
Objective - This is an applied course that integrates sports science with triathlon specific preparation, planning, and evaluation of the Junior and U 23 athlete.
Duration – This is a 35-40 hour course that will include theoretical and practical components.
Prior requirements – 2 years of coaching experience and proven educational competency through documentation.
Target group – Coaches involved with the education and coaching of National Federation athletes with an emphasis on coaches from National Federations that do not have coaching education programs.

- Running and swimming clothes.
- Notebook and writing tools.
Course Requirements for completion
- 100% attendance
- Active participation during the course.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- Act in an appropriate manner that is consistent with the spirit of the triathlon philosophy.
Written Exam Requirements
- Complete and pass a written (take home) exam 6 weeks from the end of the last class day.
- If coaches do not submit the exam, then they will not receive certification.
- If coaches do not submit the exam by the 6-week deadline, they must re-take the course.
- The courses are not evaluated on a pass-fail basis. Coaches who do not meet the required competencies can resubmit the exam until the competencies are met.
- All questions are based on the information presented in the course and in the manuals. If coaches access resources outside the course manuals and content, they must reference the sources. This includes books, journals, websites, other coaches, and so on.
Practical Exam Requirements
- Conduct a short clinic/course for junior or U23 athletes in your own country.
- Prepare a detailed plan for the course to include all aspects of the planning such as program design, safety plans and staffing.
- Prepare a detailed report of the camp and include photos or a DVD.
- Practical requirements should be completed within 3 months of the course.

Level III High Performance Coaching Course
Objective - An interactive applied course that integrates current triathlon trends in training, sport science and triathlon specific planning and evaluation for coaching the high performance athlete.
Duration – This is a 50 hour course that will include theoretical discussion, current trends and ideas and practical components on the training and racing that elite triathlete.
Prior requirements – 5 years coaching experience and same as Level II coach.
Target group – Coaches working with elite triathletes involved Continental and World Cup competition in the Olympic pipeline of development.

- Active participation during the course.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- Act in an appropriate manner that is consistent with the spirit of the triathlon philosophy.
