Team GB 2008 Chef de Mission, Simon Clegg, was delighted to welcome the athletes in to Team GB. “The squad has a great mix of experience and talent; not least, every one of the five athletes is a World Champion. I wish them well in their final preparations for the Olympic Games and look forward to some exciting performances in Beijing.”
2008 world champion Helen Tucker, has been under the spotlight since her dramatic win at the world championships in Vancouver four weeks ago. “I have had a great year so far and I’ll be looking to carry my form into Beijing,” she commented.
She will be joined on the women’s starting pontoon by eighteen year old Hollie Avil who admitted that she had only expected to be going to Beijing as part of the BOA’s 2012 Olympic Ambition Programme at the start of the year. “However, now that I am going as an athlete I certainly want to make the most of it,” said Avil.
Britain’s only Olympic Games triathlon veteran will be the experienced Tim Don who raced in both Sydney and Athens. “I am looking forward to my third Olympic Games and am aiming for the podium in Beijing,” he said.
The top Brit at last year’s Olympic Games test event with a seventh place finish was Will Clarke. “I love the course in Beijing,” he exclaimed. “I’m going to the Olympic Games with that in mind and hope to have another great race.”
Twenty-year old Alistair Brownlee, who sealed his selection with a third place finish at the Madrid world cup, completes the line up. “My original focus was 2012,” he admitted, “but I am not treating Beijing as a practice run, I’m going there to make the most of it.”
